May Update
As we approach the end of another busy half term, we would like to share some of the exciting learning experiences the children in Year 3/4 have enjoyed this month.
During our English lessons, the children explored the Greek myth Theseus and the Minotaur. Through this text, they learnt how authors build suspense by using descriptive vocabulary, short sentences, powerful verbs and dramatic cliff-hangers. After analysing the story carefully, the children planned and wrote their own suspense-filled narratives based on an Ancient Egyptian setting.
In Maths, the children have continued developing their understanding of decimals. They have learnt how to recognise and record tenths and hundredths as fractions, as well as partition decimals into different place value columns. Alongside this, the children have been comparing and ordering decimals using mathematical reasoning and explaining their answers clearly. We have also spent time practising how to tell the time on an analogue clock, focusing particularly on reading time accurately to the nearest minute.
Within Science lessons, the children became classification experts as they learnt how to sort animals into vertebrates and invertebrates using classification keys. They thoroughly enjoyed investigating different habitats and discussing how seasonal changes can affect the living things found there. In addition, the children explored how animals adapt to survive in a variety of environments around the world.
One of the highlights of the month was a special visit from Leigh, who works for Drax. Through a range of exciting practical activities and demonstrations, he introduced the children to the different states of matter. The children were fascinated by the experiments and asked some fantastic scientific questions throughout the session.
In Art, the children have been studying famous buildings and identifying key architectural features within their designs. Using a variety of artistic techniques, they experimented with shading, pattern and line to add detail and texture to their work. The children also used tracing paper to explore symmetry and create their own picture of the Taj Mahal.
During PE lessons, the children have been working hard to improve their running, jumping and throwing skills in preparation for Sports Day. It has been wonderful to see their determination, teamwork and enthusiasm during these sessions.
After half term, the Year 4 children will take part in the National Multiplication Tables Check. Further information for parents, along with opportunities for practice, can be found here: https://www.timestables.co.uk/multiplication-tables-check/

We would really appreciate your continued support in encouraging regular times tables practice at home.
Finally, we are extremely pleased with the improvements we are seeing in the children’s completion of Doodle Maths activities at home. This additional practice is already having a positive impact on their confidence and progress in maths lessons, and we hope this excellent effort will continue after half term.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support throughout this busy and successful half term.
