March Update
In Art, the children produced their final WWII pieces inspired by Henry Moore. In the lead-up to this, they explored techniques for creating tone and atmosphere, as well as developing perspective, particularly when depicting movement through the tunnels used for shelter during the war.
In English, our model text was How to Capture the Bishop Wood Brute. After exploring Bishop Wood and learning about the Brutes, the children went on to create their own instructions. Using their knowledge, they innovated on the original text to write How to Capture the Cliffe Brute. It was great to see the children applying their grammar skills with independence and flair.
In Maths, the children have been learning about the volume of cuboids and practising adding and subtracting decimals, making connections to real-life contexts such as money.
In computing, the Year 5/6 children have been learning about spreadsheets. They have explored how to use spreadsheets to organise data effectively. They have learned how to format cells and how to use formulas to add, multiply, divide, and subtract values within cells. In addition, they can now find the sum of multiple cells and calculate averages.
On 19th March, the entire class took part in a NERF session, which everyone found engaging and enjoyable. The following day, 20th March, a group of pupils represented our school in an inter-school NERF competition. Staff were extremely impressed by their confidence and resilience throughout the morning.
The children in our class have been inspired by the fundraising efforts of our PTA. They have dedicated their own time to planning and preparing items to sell, including bracelets, sweet bags, and more! Keep an eye out for them selling their creations at the PTA Easter Extravaganza on Wednesday 25th March.
We enjoyed a fantastic visit from Rock Steady Music, who showed us how fun being in a band can be. A big well done to Amelia on guitar and Eliza for singing in the band! The visit inspired some children in our class so much that they went straight outside to start their own band and it was great to hear how they have signed up for lessons in school next term - watch this space!
We also had a visit from Mellor’s Catering and their smoothie bike. The children pedalled the bike to power a blender and make their own fruit smoothies. They learnt about healthy ingredients and nutrition, then enjoyed tasting their creations. A fun way to stay active and learn about healthy eating!
Looking ahead to after Easter, we will have four school weeks remaining until SATs. Further information, including the dates, papers, SATs booster sessions, and breakfast club, will be sent to you via email. In the meantime, please continue to encourage your child to complete their Doodle programmes each week to close learning gaps, consolidate knowledge, develop independent study skills, and build confidence in applying what they have learned.
